Sign Language Interpreting

Sign Language Interpreting

Professional Language Services has a long history of delivering quality, culturally competent interpreting services to the Deaf and hard of hearing and is currently the primary sign language service provider for the State of Georgia. In addition to on-site interpreting, we also offer video remote interpreting and real-time captioning (CART) services.

We are one of the few language service companies in the country delivering a full range of sign language modalities – not just American Sign Language (see complete list below). Our interpreters have experience signing for the profoundly deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf-blind, deaf close-vision and late-deafened.

Importance of Sign Language Interpreting

There has never been a greater need for sign language interpreting than in our modern world. Provision of signing for the Deaf and hard of hearing is no longer optional or a mere courtesy, but a matter of public law. Passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that no one “shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in any place of public accommodation.” This means that the Deaf and hard of hearing must be provided with equal access to effective communication in such public locations as pharmacies, professional offices of health care providers, hospitals, service establishments, social service departments, educational institutions and places of exercise or recreation.

As with our spoken language interpreters, our sign language interpreters must pass a rigorous screening process before being accepted into the  PLS team. Our sign language interpreters have either been certified through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or tested by both a professional sign language interpreter and a certified Deaf interpreter (CDI). The latter is a Deaf or hard of hearing individual who is also an RID-certified interpreter.

Call 678-704-1786 .PLS any time of day or night to secure assistance from one of our sign language interpreters.
